After 17 years and 2 trips to the NCAA tournament, CSUN men's basketball coach Bobby Braswell is out.  Cal  State Northridge is not renewing Braswell's contract.  Braswell graduated from Northridge and went 251-258 in his 17 seasons, but the Matadors did not make the Big West Tournament for the last two years.

Braswell tweeted, "Extremely blessed by God for the opportunity He gave me over the past 17 years to touch the lives of so many great young men. Truly blessed."

Braswell said the university simply informed him that they are going in a different direction.

CSUN's new athletic director Brandon Martin has been on the job for just 12 days and he said basketball is the school's flagship sport and it needs to improve, "We need to compete for the Big West Championship every year."  Martin is a former USC basketball player and he says he will conduct a nationwide search for a new coach.

Braswell sent out this tweet late Tuesday, "Hearing from my players throughout day, really blessed me today. They are the reason I do it!"

LOS ANGELES (AP-FOX11) - Bobby Braswell is out as men's basketball coach at Cal State Northridge after 17 years that included three 20-win seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances.

Incoming athletic director Brandon Martin, who played for Braswell in high school, announced the coach's dismissal on Tuesday after his contract wasn't renewed.

Martin currently is senior associate AD for administration at Oklahoma and doesn't officially begin his new job until April 1.

Braswell had a 251-258 record at Northridge. The Matadors were 14-17 this season, when they won their first seven games and then lost 6 of their final seven. They finished ninth among 10 teams in the Big West with a 5-13 record, and failed to make last week's conference tournament.

Braswell had deep ties to Northridge. He graduated from there in 1985 and returned as the program's fourth head coach in 1996.
