PD: Teen accidentally shot by friend after committing burglary

PHOENIX -

Police say a 17-year-old boy who was killed while wearing a Junior ROTC uniform had in fact just committed a burglary -- but the shooting was apparently accidental.

Police say the boy, along with a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, committed a residential burglary at a neighbor's home near 83rd Ave and Lower Buckeye. During the burglary, several weapons were stolen, as well as a number of other items, Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump said.

They returned home and were going through the stolen items.

"The 15-year-old suspect is alleged to have pulled out one of the handguns that were stolen and begin to manipulate it. Thinking she had cleared the weapon she pointed it at her friend and pulled the trigger," stated Sgt. Crump.

When paramedics arrived, they found the teenager lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest. Someone was performing CPR at the scene.

The boy died at a hospital as a result of his injuries. A family member identified the victim as Raymond Berryman. Berryman was a student at Tolleson High School, and his friends can't believe what police say he did.

The 15-year-old girl was detained on homicide and burglary charges. We spoke to her mother, who strongly believes the shooting was an accident.

"Raymond [and my daughter] were best friends, she loved him as a brother, and I know that as a fact," said Keisha Mitchell.

The 16-year-old who was involved is facing a burglary charge. The investigation is ongoing.
