The race for governor in New Jersey picked up steam on Tuesday when Newark Mayor Cory Booker officially endorsed state Sen. Barbara Buono, a Democrat, for governor, while Gov. Chris Christie headed to Lakewood.

Buono and Booker hit the Brick City's Ironbound district in the afternoon for a "listening tour."

"I am friends with Gov. Chris Christie, but I support planned parenthood, marriage equality, earned income tax credit and regional environmental greenhouse gas agreements. On policy issues, there are differences between me and the governor," said Booker during Good Day NY.

Buono and Booker visited a law office, real estate office, tuxedo shop and diner in the largely Portuguese neighborhood. Buono said Christie's policies have harmed residents of New Jersey's cities.

"I'll be stumping with her in Newark  going door-to-door. Buono embodies those (principals I believe in) more than Gov. Christie," said Booker.

Christie was scheduled to meet with a group of senior citizens in an event that's not technically a campaign event, then meet with Orthodox Jewish leaders in one that is a campaign stop.

A recent poll showed Christie with a 36-percentage-point lead over Buono.
