STERLING, Va. -

The family of a Loudoun county teen who was killed says he didn't mean to break into his neighbor's house. Sixteen-year old Caleb Gordley's neighbor shot and killed him because he thought the teen was an intruder. The teen's family is talking to FOX 5’s Lauren DeMarco.

The family is working on funeral arrangements. DeMarco communicated with the boy's father through email and Twitter. He says he will be making a public statement soon and directed FOX 5 to another family member.

“My heart is broken. We are just devastated,” Bonnie Terry told us by phone. She was great aunt to Caleb Gordley. The 16-year-old shot dead inside his neighbor’s home in Sterling, Virginia early Sunday morning.

“This is a tremendous loss for our family we're going thru a very hard time right now, if people would just keep us in their prayers.”

Relatives say Caleb was returning home after a night out with friends and mistakenly entered the wrong house, two doors down from his own house.

Postings on Twitter from Caleb's father Shawn Gordley read, “I was just informed that Caleb & his friend hopped the fence into the wrong backyard.  They both thought it was my house.  Caleb then climbed through an unlocked window and staggered up the staircase that is identical to mine."

According to police, the homeowner awoke when his alarm was triggered.  He encountered the unknown teenager on the stairs and shot him. Caleb died at the scene.

Sheriff's officials say he had reportedly been drinking alcohol that night. They're waiting on results from the medical examiner.

Caleb Gordley was a junior at Park View High School in Sterling. He played basketball, baseball and football.

“He was a great athlete tremendous with sports he was a very talented song writer,” says Terry.

His musical talent, highlighted in an outpouring of condolences across social media..

Friends say he was an aspiring rapper, nicknamed Prince George, and recorded a song just last Friday.

“Hopefully we can come to terms with this loss and know that Caleb’s in God’s hands now.”

So far there are no charges against the homeowner who allegedly shot Caleb. He's described as a 46-year-old volunteer firefighter in Sterling. And we've learned that he was not the only one home at the time of the shooting. There were also a woman and teenaged boy inside the house.
