Rosemont Cubs? Mayor makes pitch for suburban stadium

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Take me out to the ballgame in Rosemont? The mayor of the suburb is trying to lure the Cubs out of Wrigley Field -- and he's making quite a pitch.

The opening day for the Cubs is in two weeks, which is also the day they hope to have answer from the city about their plans to renovate Wrigley Field. If a deal is not in place by that date, the mayor of Rosemont says he's ready to play ball.

"Rosemont is built around entertainment," Rosemont Mayor Brad Stephens says. "I think adding the Cubs to an already great lineup of entertainment venues is only the icing on the cake."

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts has been frustrated by the city of Chicago and 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney who have yet to sign off on a $300 million renovation of 99-year-old Wrigley Field. The renovation would be financed entirely by the Cubs, but they're asking the city for more night games and more advertising inside the park to make those numbers work.

In Rosemont, Mayor Stephens says he would help the Cubs financially to build a new ballpark on a 25 acre site.

"I think we can offer a viable option that makes sense for the Cubs that puts them alongside 294 and visibility for sponsorship and signage with no restrictions on the residential population that is nowhere to be seen around here," Stephens says.

While many fans believe the Cubs would never leave their ivy-covered shrine on Chicago's North Side, sports business expert Marc Ganis says, don't be so sure.

"This is an absolutely legitimate option and in many cases you look at it and say it's actually a better option for the Cubs except for the emotional connection to Wrigley Field," Ganis says.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Ricketts said, "The family appreciates the expressions of interest from Rosemont and others, however the current focus is to work towards an agreement with the city of Chicago."

Cubs fan in Rosemont said that while a new stadium might be more convenient, it will never be Wrigleyville.

"I don't like it. I like the Cubs right where they are," one fan said.

"Rosemont is really nice, obviously what it's turning into, but I'd much rather see the Cubs where they've always been," another told our cameras.

Rosemont is not the only community making mooneyes at the Cubs. DuPage County has also expressed some interest.
