WASHINGTON, DC -

D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser is running for mayor.

Political consultant Tom Lindenfeld tells The Associated Press that Bowser will announce her candidacy Saturday morning outside her childhood home in northeast Washington.

Bowser is a 40-year-old Democrat who has served on the D.C. Council since 2007. She won a special election to replace Adrian Fenty after he was elected mayor.

She has been a frequent critic of Mayor Vincent Gray, saying the city needs a leader with energy and vision. Bowser was one of three councilmembers to call for Gray's resignation last summer amid revelations that he was elected with the aid of $650,000 in illicit funds.

Gray has not said whether he'll seek re-election next year. Councilmembers Tommy Wells and Jack Evans are considering mayoral bids.
