Near West Side Greek Orthodox church damaged by fire - DC Breaking Local News Weather Sports FOX 5 WTTG

A Near West Side Greek Orthodox church was damaged by a fire Monday afternoon.

About 12:15 p.m. Chicago Fire Department personnel were notified of a fire at St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church, 733 S. Ashland Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs. The fire started on the second floor of the church, a Fire Media spokesman said.

Firefighters used two lines and a ladder to the roof to fight the blaze, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The CTA's No. 9 Ashland buses were temporarily rerouted in both directions around the scene of the fire because of the fire department equipment on the street. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of about 3 p.m.

St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1910 as Anshe Sholom Synagogue, according to the church's website. In 1927, after much of the congregation had moved from the immediate area, the building was transformed into a Greek Orthodox Church. It sustained what the church called a "disastrous fire" in 1977, after which it was repaired and continues to be active to this day. Lenten services had been scheduled for Monday at the church.
