Search for driver involved in fatal hit and run

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a beloved northwest Atlanta father on Saturday.  Investigators say they have no leads, and they don't have a description of the vehicle involved.

Walter Amey, 54, was struck and killed while walking with his bike along Abner Place around 9 p.m. on Saturday night.  He was almost home when he was hit.  Amey was discovered on the ground, and he was barely breathing.  He died at the hospital.

His daughter, Monica Amey, spoke to FOX 5 and as she did, she clutched pictures of her father close to her chest.

"If somebody told me to describe my dad, he was a go-getter," she said.  "He got out.  He did his job as a dad. He did his job as a family man, you know. And i just -- this is -- this is how I remember him."

She says that she and her father planned on running their first Peachtree Road Race together this summer. She is now considering running it in his memory.

Amey passed away at the hospital before his daughter could say goodbye. She and those who loved the vibrant, active man say that comfort will only come when the person behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck Amey comes forward.

"I don't know if it's done out of fear. I don't know if it was done out of a person who has a careless heart. But either way it goes, by now, if that was the case, then whomever did it should have come forth by now," said Monica Amey.

Mr. Amey's family and friends told FOX 5 that the neighborhood where the hit-and-run took place is off the beaten path, and is not a popular cut-through.  That leads them to believe the person responsible may live in the area.

Investigators are seeking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward.
