Police said a woman left her 4-year-old daughter on the side of Interstate 75 in the middle of the night.
A 911 call was made just after 4 a.m. Saturday from an apartment complex 300 block of Morrow Road in Morrow. The caller said her daughter, 31-year-old Jan Anderson, was beating her and she needed help.
Police say Anderson had left the apartment by the time they arrived at the scene. They said Anderson had taken her 4-year-old daughter with her.
From there, police said Anderson walked with her daughter along Interstate 75 in the middle of the night with her daughter. She was possibly heading to their home in College Park. They said at some point she found a hole in the fence along the interstate, reached through it and dropped her daughter to the ground. She then continued walking by herself, leaving the young girl to fend for herself in the dark woods.
Police said the 4-year-old girl was alone in those woods for hours before they were notified she was missing. Investigators said Anderson was arrested about four hours after getting into a fight with her mother. That was when she told officers about her daughter's whereabouts.
Officials immediately began a frantic search of the area with K9 units and a helicopter. They eventually found her around 9:45 a.m. Saturday in a muddy area behind some houses near of Pasadena Court and Hollywood Drive. Neighbors said the girl was found face down sleeping on the ground. Police said she had cuts on her face and looked scared, but did not have any serious injuries.
Anderson refused to tell investigators why she abandoned her daughter. She is being charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and reckless conduct. More charges may be pending.
