WASHINGTON -
The news at MedStar Washington Hospital Center was all good. Doctors and Alexandria's Police Chief held a news conference Thursday to inform the public that motorcycle patrol officer Peter Laboy is recovering nicely.
In fact, Chief Medical Officer Janis Orlowski said he is making tremendous progress since the gunshot wound to the head last month.
Laboy was shot when he pulled over a cab driver during a traffic stop in Old Town after a reported stalking. Police Chief Earl Cook says they still have no motive for the shooting, which he called senseless.
Doctors say their prognosis at the time of the shooting for a recovery was grim. They didn't expect Laboy to survive. But they say he is now talking, saying a word or two and walking a few steps. They say he also recognizes his wife and four kids.
Officer Laboy has been transferred to MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. His rehab is expected to last anywhere from 6 to 12 months.
