COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A Marietta firefighter who collapsed and died trying help an injured motorist last week was laid to rest on Tuesday.

Family and fellow firefighters from around the metro area said their goodbyes to Lonnie Nutt.

Funeral services were held at Roswell Street Baptist Church. After the services, Nutt's casket was placed onboard Engine 53, making his final ride as fellow firefighters take his body to Kennesaw Memorial on Whitlock Avenue.

Marietta authorities say Nutt, 49, and two others responded to a wreck on Whitlock Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. They say when Nutt began to help an injured person, he fell to the ground as a result of an apparent heart attack.

Authorities say Nutt died while being transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

"A line of duty death is a firefighter's worst nightmare. The Marietta Fire Department was established a 1854, and this is the first line of duty death we've experienced. This has been a very difficult time," said Marietta Fire Chief Jackie Gibbs.

During Nutt's funeral, his comrades described a man who loved to help, welcomed everyone with a strong handshake and a big smile and who was known for his love and devotion to his wife and daughter.

"For those of you who are firefighters across the state, and some of you from outside the state, if you never got to meet Lonnie, you missed one of the pleasures in life," sGibbs.

While all of the Marietta firefighters were at Nutt's service, other fire stations around the metro area filled in for them and took their calls.

Nutt was an Oklahoma native, but worked at the Marietta Fire Department for 19 years.
