Elderly woman missing from Logan Square

UPDATE: Mercedes Alvarez was found safe Sunday at a casino.

Police were searching for an elderly woman who went missing Saturday from the North Side Logan Square neighborhood.

Mercedes Alvarez, 71, was last seen about 1:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Belden Avenue, a missing person alert from Chicago Police said.

Alvarez suffers from an age-related disease and speaks only Spanish, police said. She may be near North Cicero and West Diversey Avenues, or may have taken a bus to Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind., police said.

Alvarez is described as 5-foot, 150 pounds, with gray and black hair, brown eyes, and age spots. She was last seen wearing a three-quarter length red coat, black spandex pants, a multi-colored rosary bracelet and open back black shoes, the alert said.
