WASHINGTON -
Three juveniles are in custody after a police involved shooting in Northeast on Saturday.
Police say the incident began after officers started following a vehicle they believed was carjacked earlier in the day.
The vehicle traveled down New York Avenue and I-295. When it exited at Benning Road, it got stuck in traffic and that's when police approached it on foot. One of the officers was struck by the car. Police spokesman Gwen Crump says that's when the other officer fired his service revolver at the car.
The chase continued in the 500 block of 24th Street. Witnesses say the suspects bailed out of the vehicle and ran towards the alley.
Tiara Routh and a friend were right there when it happened
"We heard a loud explosion, it sounded like a gunshot," Routh says. "I just thank God we weren't hurt because we were right there in the alley."
Police say all three juveniles, two males and one female were taken into custody on 24th Street. Witnesses say one of them, a 17 year old boy, was grazed in the thigh and treated at the hospital. Police says all the injuries were non-life threatening.
