Police warn NW Side businesses of armed robberies

Police on Saturday issued an alert to businesses in the Portage Park and Jefferson Park neighborhoods on the Northwest Side, warning them of a suspect robbing businesses at knifepoint.

The robberies happened Sunday about 10 p.m. in the 5300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, Thursday about 4:50 p.m. in the 5200 block of North Milwaukee Avenue and again a few minutes later in the 4900 block of West Irving Park Road, and Friday about 11 p.m. in the 4300 block of North Central Avenue, the alert said.

The suspect is described as a man between 20 and 30 years old, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, about 170 or 180 pounds with a medium complexion. He was wearing a black jacket or black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and gym shoes, the alert said.

Police advise business owners to make sure surveillance cameras are working and to report suspicious activity immediately.
