Burglars posing as landscapers in Butts County

Authorities in Butts County are warning residents about a rash of burglaries committed by men posing as landscapers.

The Butts County Sheriff's Office said that there have been at least six burglaries in the last two weeks.  Police say the suspects are three men who drive a white or brown pick-up truck.

"They would approach the house, if they made contact with somebody inside the residence then they would say they were landscapers and if they didn't, then they'd try to burglarize the house," said Chief Mike Maddox of the Butts County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's officials say that in all of the cases, the men have picked a location that's off the beaten path.

Jerrell Welch is the latest victim of the burglars. His dog Jordan and another dog were the only ones home when the crooks apparently burst through his back door. The suspects stole two big screen TVs, three laptops, coins, jewelry and other valuables, Welch said.

Welch said it appeared that the burglars had spent some time in his home.

Chief Maddox says recently-elected Sheriff Gary Long has instituted new procedures which include Facebook and other ways of flooding the community with useful information, such as the fact that the burglars are posing as landscapers.

"By letting them know about it and keeping them informed, we've got every neighborhood that's got an officer in it now," Maddox said.
