Process begins to replace ousted DeKalb Co. School Board members

Posted: Updated:

Governor Nathan Deal's nominating committee met on Friday to start the process of choosing six new members for the DeKalb County School Board.

The meeting began at noon at the headquarters of the State Board of Education. There is no shortage of applicants to fill the six seats -- 400 people are vying for the seats left vacant after Governor Deal dismissed the six school board members on Monday.

The DeKalb County School Board members who were not dismissed cannot conduct business until they reach a quorum. The committee is trying to carefully, but quickly, to find six new replacements.

State Representative Scott Holcomb has a child enrolled in the district and says the nominating committee will start sifting through those 400 resumes.

"I expect those who are charged with the task are going to be devoting most if not all of their energy to this next week," said Holcomb.
Holcomb says many applicants have already been cut due to the fact they do not live in the county. The DeKalb delegation will meet with the nominating committee as they try to determine who is best suited to help the district salvage its credibility with SACS and the parents of the district's 99,000 students.
The district has until the end of the year to resolve the governing issues that left DeKalb on probation, which is why Holcomb says picking the right people for the job is critical.

"And I do think we're going to have some names surface by the end of next week in a very quick fashion because people understand that time is ticking, and we need to get moving on this," Holcomb said.

Rep. Howard Mosby (R-Atlanta) told FOX 5 that the first priority is to get the system off of probation.

Mosby said that the board members who were removed last week continue to be paid by the county until the six new members are selected and certified.

The nominating committee issued a statement on Friday afternoon stating, "It is an energizing process to see so many fine candidates offering to serve DeKalb County. We will be interviewing starting this weekend and hope to have names to Gov. Deal by mid-week."
