Women don't always like asking for what they're worth.
"Oh, I get nervous. I automatically assume that I'm not gonna get it," Iris Welch explained.
We want more money, but many women are too afraid to ask for a raise.
"It's pretty tough, you know, when you go in and you sit there and the boss is actually looking at you like, okay, what would you like," said Campegia Sugar.
However, that fear means a huge gender gap, with women making .78 to each $1.00 of our male counterparts.
"In the course of a career, a woman is going to lose over a million dollars, that's a pretty significant amount of money," said Annette Saldana, Owner of the Art and Science of Irresistible Requests.
She coaches women to ask for exactly what they would like.
"Get clear about what you want and also, dream big enough that you can then make room for concessions down the line. So I would say go for twice as much as you really want."
Studies show that men are four times more likely to ask for raises than women.
If they don't give you what you want, Annette said, "I would say thank you so much for that offer. I would like to explore some other opportunities. I was really thinking we would land somewhere in the ball park of $120,000, so I want to know what constraints you're working within and have a better understanding of how you came up with that amount."
A poor economy has made it tough for employers to give big raises but there are other terms that can be negotiated.
"If they really do want you badly, then maybe they can't give it to you financially, but they can give it to you with other benefits such as extra time off, working from home, flex time."
Knowing what you're worth also means not being afraid to walk away.
"That's the first mistake. Women need to be willing to walk away."
Otherwise, they'll keep walking away with a smaller paycheck.
"I think they shouldn't let no deter them from getting what they want, which you know, everyone wants to make more money and I think especially if you're good at what you do, you have a passion for it, you'll make more money, because you're happy doing it," Iris said.
