SILVER SPRING, Md. -

It's an all too common hazard during a storm -- falling trees.

And true to form, some huge trees came down Wednesday with nearly tragic consequences.

A Silver Spring couple was in their car, when a tree in the 2900 block of New Castle Avenue toppled onto it.

Assistant Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Graham says the tree crushed the passenger side with such force, it popped open the door on the driver's side. And that open door is how Graham says the couple made it out.

"They were injured and taken to the hospital, with only minor injuries from what I understand," neighbor Dwight Maxwell says.

A woman in Seat Pleasant also survived a near miss when a huge tree came down in the storm and hit her house, inches from where she was cooking.

"I heard my mother scream, and I thought it was the kitchen cabinets falling," Curtis Jeter says. "And then you get up there and you see it's a tree."

Yanna Crawley says there were five members of her family in the house at the time. And when she got there and saw the roof split in two, she was overcome with thoughts about what could have happened.

"It could have been much worse," says Crawley. "There were a lot of people in the house. I just thank God it wasn't."

There was one storm-related tree death. Police say a 52-year-old man in Midland, Va. in Fauquier County died when a pine tree he was cutting fell on his head.
