We're days away from having an emergency financial manager on the job in Detroit. Tuesday, some citizens spoke out on the controversial measure.
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -
Time is running out for members of the Detroit city council to be able to say that they do not want an Emergency Manager in the city.
Members of the board agree on that point for the most part, the bottom line is how do you get there? How do you put forth city legislation to stop an EM from coming in? There are two resolutions the council is considering.
The first resolution disputes the state review board's findings that found there is a financial emergency in the city of Detroit. The second resolution will ask the governor to delay action until March 28, that's when Public Act 436 takes effect. That measure gives other options outside of an Emergency Manager.
City council member Ken Cockrel Jr. is hoping the governor will consider other options. "Why not follow your own law? You built it into your new law, Public Act 436, why not wait and let that take effect? So you can fulfill the goals you were trying to accomplish in the first place?" Cockrel said.
And councilwoman Joann Watson went even further saying, "It sounds like we're saying please help us save our jobs. We have to stand for the constitution and our people. It's not about our jobs. And he (Governor Snyder) should not have done it.
The council is meeting on Wednesday at 2 p.m. to vote on the two resolutions. The next deadline in the process is Tuesday, March 12 when representatives of the city will have to go to Lansing and present the case to the Deputy Treasurer disputing the city's financial emergency.
