Rebuilding Long Beach

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -- You can see and hear the rebuilding in Long Beach, Long Island. But four months after Superstorm Sandy, one family said their quest to start over in the city they love has not been easy, to say the least.

New York City Firefighter Chris Princiotta found himself with another full-time job post-Sandy: working to rebuild the home he and his brother bought only one month before the storm hit.

Firefighter friends helped the Princiotta brothers renovate before they initially moved in. But all that hard work got swept away.

His father, Chuck, himself a contractor, said there was so much damage that the city of Long Beach gave them two choices after the storm: either raise the existing structure or demolish the home.

So they decided to knock down what was left and start over by raising the home to meet FEMA regulations.

Chris said they're getting some insurance and FEMA help but not as much as they'd like .

The family estimates rebuilding will cost upwards of $200,000. Despite that Chris said there was no doubt about starting over.

The family said one of the silver linings in all of this has been the generous people and groups who have helped them rebuild, including Home Depot, 84 Lumber and the New York Says Thank You Foundation.

The family said they hope to have the house finished by May.
