Detroit City Council discusses potential state takeover

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

With an emergency manager looming in Detroit, members of Detroit City Council are asking Mayor Dave Bing to join them Wednesday to discuss an appeal to the state.

Council members met Tuesday and agreed to meet again at 9 a.m. Wednesday to go over a resolution and possibly vote on Thursday. They've invited Bing to attend the meeting.

Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh said Monday he met with Gov. Rick Snyder to make the case for a modified consent agreement with strict state oversight instead of an emergency manager.

Pugh hopes he and his colleagues can come up with more ideas before the March 12 deadline.

Last week, Snyder declared a financial emergency in Detroit, paving the path for an emergency manager.

Detroit faces a $327 million budget deficit, more than $14 billion in long-term debt and persistent cash flow issues.

We'll have much more on this story tonight during FOX 2 News beginning at 5 p.m.
