FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga -

Fayette County Public Schools voted on Monday to close four of its schools.

The district is trying to close a $15 million budget shortfall.

The schools slated to close are Tyrone Elementary, Brooks Elementary, Fayette Middle School and Fayetteville Intermediate School.

"I couldn't be more upset or sad of the consequences of what is happening here, but at the same time, again, I have to do what I think is best for all of our 20,000 students," said Leonard Presberg of the Fayette County Board of Education.

Many parents said they weren't happy with the board's decision.

"Our school is our community. There will be no more building. There will be nothing. Our town will be a ghost town. We just lost the only thing that holds us there," said one tearful parent.

Some parents said they moved to Fayette County specifically for the schools.

"I knew Fayette County had better schools and I always wanted to be here with my kids, you know, I want the best for them. And I'm kind of sad because I don't think they are going to get that now," said Charlandra Redding.

Several parents said they were considering leaving the county.

Even with the closures, officials say that will only account for about $3.2 million of the budget shortfall.
