Community college gives up its Williams campus

Updated:

WILLIAMS, Ariz. (AP) - Coconino Community College is transferring ownership of its Williams campus to the local school district.

The college's governing board voted this week to give the building to the Williams Unified School District at the end of June.

College President Leah Bornstein says the campus established in 2002 never gained popularity. Graduates of Williams High School had attended classes there, but Bornstein says they prefer to go to the main campus in Flagstaff for the social atmosphere and other amenities.

Bornstein says the college can't afford to maintain the building without higher enrollment.

School district Superintendent Rachel Savage says taking ownership of the building will allow staff to develop more high school courses.

The college can use the building free of charge for meetings, classes, or other activities.
