Catholic faithful sorry to say goodbye to Pope Benedict

PHOENIX -

At Catholic churches all over the valley today, the church rang just before noon for Pope Benedict's resignation.

We talked to churchgoers at Saint Mary's Basilica in downtown Phoenix.

The bells at Saint Mary's Basilica rang for 8 minutes -- one minute for each year of Pope Benedict's 8 years as pope. Inside the basilica, the faithful gathered for mass.

"I tell myself now that we have no main shepherd but God, that we really have to trust in Him even further," said Mary Navarro.

"I think if he is not very healthy or whatever, I kind of understand that. But it is kind of hard to see someone who is the most powerful man in our religion be brittle or fragile," said Jeff Berard.

Many here saw the Vatican's helicopter flying over Rome, taking the pope his summer home.

"Today I had some sadness in my heart," said George Sandoval.

Sandoval has seen the pope twice in Rome. Now he's wondering who will become the next pope.

"Personally I would love a pope from Latin America or Africa. At the same I want a man of God. Someone who is holy."

Mary Navarro is hoping for a pope who will promote world peace.

"Even though Pope Benedict did a lot of that to us, I really believe we need even more," says Navarro.

"Pretty much all the popes have been pretty good. They are all holy, they are holy and they are all doing the best they can. I am sure that the next pope is going try even harder and be even better."

Still no word on when the next pope will be chosen. A date has not been picked for secret papal conclave.

We should know more when many of the world's cardinal meet at the Vatican on Monday.
