Michael Murphy Schmelzinger
A 17-year-old has died after a single-vehicle crash in Manassas Thursday morning.
Police responded to the 10600 block of Lake Jackson Drive at around 11:07 a.m.
Police say Michael Murphy Schmelzinger, a junior at Osbourn Park High School, struck a tree while he was traveling southbound on Lake Jackson Drive in a 2008 Ford Mustang.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash.
Schmelzinger was smart and athletic, according to his principal. A classmate told us he was a happy kid, always smiling. He was on the swimming and lacrosse teams.
Friends went onto Twitter to remember Schmelzinger.
"Life is precious," wrote one.
"Gonna miss the kid," tweeted another.
"Rest easy, bro" and "you're an angel now," wrote two others.
Someone else tweeted: "tomorrow let's have a moment of silence for Mike."
In a statement to FOX 5 News, Osbourn Park Principal Neil Beech called Schmelzinger "a promising young man."
He added, "we will be banding together as a close-knit school community to celebrate his life and mourn his loss."
Beech says grief counselors will be at the school Friday to help students struggling with such a sudden and violent death of a popular classmate.
