MOUND, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Westonka Public School District is responding to outrage over a series of suspensions by formally apologizing for the discipline, launching an investigation and placing the Mound-Westonka High School athletic director on administrative leave.

While most board meetings take place at the Educational Service Center on Sunnyfield Road, there were so many angry parents that the 7 p.m. meeting was held at the school's theater instead to accommodate the crowd.

A total of eight students -- six hockey players and two swimmers -- were suspended just before a varsity playoff game on Friday after they recorded a "Harlem Shake" dance video in the cafeteria as part of a school project.

The suddenly short-handed Mound Westonka hockey team fell Friday night to unexpected victor Blake, ending the high school career of the suspended seniors.

The students were also cited by police for disorderly conduct, but those charges were dropped at the request of the school's superintendent, who apologized for the "poor judgement" in handling the incident at Monday night's meeting.

One suspended Mound-Westonka senior told FOX 9 he couldn't believe a video that was approved by teachers caused such a stir. The players stuck together and spent their suspensions playing pond hockey on Monday.
