Andrew Schmitt enjoys the beers at his local pub, but wants to bring them home on Sundays as well without having to plan too far ahead.
"Ward 6 (in St. Paul) is a great place to come to get a beer any day of the week, but it doesn't make sense that they have a monopoly on Sundays," Schmitt said. "It' s just not fair business practice."
Schmitt formed a group called Minnesota Beer Activists. Through social media he is pushing for liquor stores to be open on Sundays. Annually the issue seems to surface at the Capitol and also fails. This year, lawmakers amended a bill aimed to allow sales on Sundays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas
"It's never been a consumer effort before. Grocery stores have tried and they gave up a couple of years ago," Schmitt said. "I've spoken to several store owners who would like to be open on Sundays and closed on Mondays. Mondays are very slow days, Sunday is the second busiest shopping day of the week -- so why does it make sense to be closed?"
Beer runs bring plenty of people across the border to Hudson, Wis., where one liquor store owners told FOX 9 85 percent of Sunday sales come from Minnesotans.
"As a business owners in Minnesota I'm sure it's nice to have Sundays off," said Nate Grahak from St. Paul. "But as a consumer if I want to go buy something at the store, I want to buy it. The rules are kind of silly."
"I think it's kind of ridiculous," said Jay Lueddres from Plymouth, Minn. "There is so much tax revenue we could be getting, and Hudson is benefiting from it, so I'm sure they are glad we don't do it but I think we should."
Over the years some liquor store owners have been divided over the issue. Some want the seventh day of business, others say opening an extra day means more costs, but not necessarily more people buying more than usual.
"It's going to be tough because we are battling lobbyists that are up at the Capitol everyday and have the ears of all the politicians," Schmitt said. "It's not world peace, but it's something that would make the state better so I think it's important."
