NYC murder rate continues to decline

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The city's murder rate, which fell to an all-time low in 2012, continues to drop thanks to creative new police tactics that target youth gangs and domestic violence incidents.

The new tactics helped the city's homicide numbers fall to a record-low 414 murders in 2012 and the NYPD says homicide is down another 33 percent so far this year.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said one of the strategies the NYPD uses is by charging gang members with conspiracy, using threats they make on social media such as Facebook.

Kelly told the New York Post small crews of gangs are responsible for 30 percent of all the shootings in the city. He also added the NYPD is doubling the gang division from 150 to 300 officers.

The NYPD has officers devoted to arrests for domestic violence, helping to prevent possible murders by abusive spouses, according to Kelly.

The commissioner also credited stop-and-frisk, the real-time crime center, Compstat and new technologies for reducing the murder plunge.
