Fired city director says she was falsely accused of drinking on the job

ATLANTA -

A city of Atlanta manager fired over having shots of alcohol at a city function says she was falsely accused.

The city of Atlanta was holding an all-day seminar for more than 100 employees at the Adamsville Recreation Center when a surveillance camera captured footage of Director of Sanitation Gayla Dotson and two subordinates drink something in the parking lot.

A whistleblower claimed that he saw the women take small bottles of alcohol and spike their juices. All three employees were later fired.

Attorney Mary Huber, who represents the terminated employees, said that they were drinking juice and not alcohol.

"They are drinking juice because they gave them juice and then the investigation reports says well they are shaking the bottles, yeah well, you shake your bottle of juice," said Huber.

Huber said the women added shots of 5 Hour Energy to the juice.

Dotson later took a breathalyzer, which found no trace of alcohol.

"If they had been drinking, they would have tested positive – something," Huber said.

The attorney said that during that short sequence, no employees got close enough to be able to claim they saw liquor bottles in the back of that vehicle.

"Had they been drinking at 10:15 in the morning, there would be someone who would have come forward saying they exhibited signs of drinking," Huber said.

Beyond the safety question of alcohol, Atlanta City Councilman C.T. Martin says there is another reason why residents should be concerned Dotson is gone. He says that she is the best sanitation director in decades.

"They are not getting as good of service as they have been getting," Martin.

Mayor Kasim Reed's office said they couldn't comment because it's the case is in the hands of attorneys.
