NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police have arrested the father of a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the arm on Friday.

33-year-old Denny Pantoja was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Police had initially questioned Pantoja who said that his son was shot during a robbery but later admitted that wasn't true, according to police.

The shooting happened inside an apartment on Westchester Avenue at about 10:30 a.m., police said.

Pantoja ran outside with his child and flagged down an ambulance, the New York Post reported.

Cops investigated and determined the boy was playing with the gun and it accidentally discharged.

The boy was listed in stable condition at Lincoln Hospital.
