Stalking incidents of young women, girls reported in Chevy Chase, Silver Spring areas

CHEVY CHASE, Md. -

Montgomery County police are on the lookout for a man or several different men who have been stalking young women and girls near Chevy Chase and Silver Spring.

"I think that this guy is escalating," says a 20-year-old Montgomery College student, the most recent of the would-be victims. "When it started, he was just creeping on people, saying like 'Hey, come with me.' Then he actually tried to get someone, which was me, and I think he's only going to keep trying."

Her close encounter happened Tuesday night around 7 p.m. as she was walking the short distance home from her job as a nanny in Friendship Heights.

"He was a Hispanic man and about 5'10" or 5'11" with short hair, jeans and t-shirt," she says. "Not normal attire in freezing cold weather."

She says he followed her in his white or light blue minivan, then got out and went after her.

"He wasn't just walking out of his car," she says. "He swung open the door and started walking towards me fast, and I was like, 'Oh my goodness.'"

Earlier that afternoon, along South Park Avenue in the commercial part of Friendship Heights, a man driving a maroon SUV approached a 13-year-old girl and started asking questions, including her name.

"It's terrifying," says Jean Minor, along the street where the girl was approached. "I have a teenage daughter, so it's terrifying. It's a shame our children can't just go out and be safe."

In the first incident just after school last Friday afternoon, a group of kids at Rollingwood Apartments off East-West Highway in Silver Spring was approached by a man asking inappropriate questions about their bodies.

Montgomery County police say they want to get the word out.

"We have nothing to suggest they're related at this time," says Officer Britta Thomas. "But we wanted to make sure people we're aware just so they could keep their eyes open so we don't have anything more serious happen."
