Rape suspect to be sentenced for behind-bars plot to kill cop

PHOENIX -

Dejuan Donaldson was just 18 years old when he was arrested and charged with the rape of three girls. His youngest victim was just 10 years old.

Police say he would scope out vacant houses and kidnap and rape his victims at knifepoint.

Friday, Donaldson will be sentenced, but not just for charges of sexual assault. Investigators say once he was behind bars, he conspired with his mother to kidnap, torture, and kill a Phoenix Police officer.

Donaldson conjured up this almost unbelievable plan to try and get himself out of jail. The plan was to get an on-camera confession from a police officer saying Donaldson was being framed -- then send that video to news stations and sue the city for millions.

Dejuan Donaldson's plan was outlined in jailhouse letters sent to his dad and girlfriend. But MCSO detention officers intercepted those letters.

In the letter, Donaldson said: "Our target is any Phoenix Police officer."

Donaldson told his girlfriend she "needs to get any Phoenix Police officer alone with her."

Once the officer and Donaldson's girlfriend are alone -- Donaldson instructed his dad to"[beat] him up, tie him up and hold him hostage... Ya'll can use his Taser gun to torture him and make him follow your commands."

"We need the police officer to basically confess on camera that I'm innocent and I'm being framed... once ya'll are done with the cop you already know what to do with him."

Police say Donaldson's mom, Cherise Donaldson Hatchett, was in on the plan: we interviewed her back in 2011 after Donaldson was arrested for rape.

They think they have the person but they don't," said Hatchett in 2011. "I know he's being set up... I want another DNA test taken, court ordered but not by them, by an outside source who is neutral."

Police say they have recorded phone conversations of Donaldson in jail talking to his mom. She said "...we need a gun, the lawyer gonna do it?"

She pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and was sentenced to two years' probation.

The murder plot also involved a prosecutor and a defense attorney.

Because Donaldson has already pleaded guilty to the sex assaults and conspiracy to kill an officer, he could be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
