Snowmobiles help get Long Island man to hospital

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Thomas Monaghan was determined to go to work on Saturday, February 9, the morning of the blizzard. So he ventured outside to shovel nearly 30 inches of snow along his driveway in East Setauket, Long Island.

It wasn't long though before he felt a pain in his chest. His wife called 911, gave him some aspirin, and waited for the ambulance.

Finally after a half hour two volunteer firefighters arrived on foot. They had abandoned the ambulance a mile away because the roads were impassable.

They strapped him to a basket similar to ones used to airlift patients to the hospital. But this time there were no waiting helicopters -- just a one-mile walk through the snow.

Out of nowhere two women on snowmobiles arrived to rush Monaghan to the ambulance that eventually transported him to stony brook hospital.

Monaghan received stents to open two blocked arteries and is expected to make a full recovery.
