Merged airline will operate out of Sky Harbor's Terminal 4

PHOENIX -

At Sky Harbor Airport Thursday, passengers had a lot of questions and some mixed feelings about what the merger will mean to them.

"Well I guess it does really just kind of depend if prices start going up," says Mark McGinnis, American Airlines customer.

"Oh no I don't have any concern about it as long as everything is on time and there's no increase in the baggage fees," says Sabrina Hillstrand, US Airways passenger.

One thing we do know -- after the merger, American Airlines will move operations from terminal 3 to terminal 4. At a news conference at the airport Thursday, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton had a positive outlook on the deal.

"Through this process maintaining Sky Harbor as a hub of the world's largest airline is incredibly important," says Stanton.

As for the potential of people losing their jobs at the airport as a result of the merger, Stanton said he doesn't see that happening.

"I have been told that of the jobs that are located here at Sky Harbor Airport, the reservations center, the flight training center, they're not going anywhere. So this is still going to be a major, major employment center for the new merged airline."

The merger news was already causing some confusion today for a woman from Montreal trying to head home on American. She showed up at the US Airways terminal instead.

"I came here, I took the bus and now they tell me they cannot serve me, I have to go back to terminal 3," she says. "I'm glad I came early."

The merger still needs approval from government anti-trust regulators and a bankruptcy judge, but if the deal goes through as it's expected to, four airlines will control three-quarters of all U.S. airline traffic.

However, the whole process could take up to two years -- so if you're flying US Air, stay at Terminal 4 until you hear official word. If you're flying American, you're in Terminal 3.
