DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

When the school bell rings, parents will tell you it's a zoo outside Oakley W. Best Middle School in Dearborn Heights, a maze of cars and children just trying to get home.  Wednesday afternoon, a sixth grader was hit by a car in the crosswalk.

"She was hit in the shoulder by the mirror and knocked to the ground," said Dearborn Heights Police Sergeant Al Naxon.   "She was transferred to Oakwood Hospital and then they took her down to Children's for observation."

The girl will be okay.  Police say the 18-year-old driver ran a stop sign and fled the scene, but students and concerned parents stepped up.

"We had a witness that followed him, and we finally ended up catching up to him at Outer Drive and Southfield with several of our cars there and we boxed him in and pulled him over," Naxon explained.

Police say the first thing the teen did was ask about the girl.

"He just got scared, and when he hit the kid, I guess his younger sister was in the car and said, 'Hurry up.  Get out of here.  Get out of here.'  So he panicked and fled.  I don't think he realized the results of him fleeing the scene," Naxon said.

Police found fabric from the girl's backpack on the driver's car.  Police say speed and alcohol did not play a role in the crash.  The driver was arrested and will be arraigned and charged with fleeing the scene and failure to yield.

Police say he should be counting his blessings.

"Very lucky because if she would've got hit by the front of the car, could've been a lot different story," said Naxon.
