Woman finds second chance at love after death of husband

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

This is a story of love lost and love found. Kenya Simmons suffered through every wife's worst nightmare, and this Valentine's Day, her second chance at love is a dream come true.

"I sent the e-mail because I just can't thank my husband enough for what all he's done for me and my family," said Kenya.

Her e-mail began with a story that FOX 5 covered over a decade ago. On Memorial Day weekend in 1999, her husband dove into a lake to help an overturned boat.

"In the process of saving one person, he drowned, and one of the other gentleman drowned," Kenya wrote.

As a teen bride, she was suddenly a single mom of four young kids.

"To have that taken away suddenly, you're not prepared for it," said Kenya.

She also had to keep the family construction business going. Alford Simmons Jr., a construction colleague, called Simmons about a project.

"And that phone call probably not only saved my life, but also gave me a renewed sense of, okay, I have something I need to keep going for the sake of my kids," said Kenya.

Thirteen years later, the man behind that life-saving call is her second chance at love.

"Pieces of the puzzle just started to fit," said Alford

Their blended family now includes three grandchildren, and one on the way. The key to their love story is a shared sense of faith.

"My parents used to always say, when you enter a relationship, make sure that you're equally yoked. That's in the Bible, and that's basically making sure that everything that you stand for is pretty much the same," said Alford.

Though nobody knows better than Kenya how quickly things can change, she's got a clear vision where she wants to be with her husband.

"Retired," exclaimed Kenya.
