Heather Raye is heartbroken. She last saw her friend, Jennie Scavone, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday in a parking lot. The two women had finished their shifts at the Bouzouki Lounge in downtown Detroit where Raye is a manager and Scavone was a waitress.
"She was unbelievable. She was super sweet, always friendly, always upbeat," Raye remarked.
However, within minutes of leaving the parking lot, turning down Brush onto Monroe and onto I-75 North, Scavone was dead. A courtesy van driver saw her SUV idling next to the median wall, stopped to see if she needed help and found her slumped over the steering wheel. There were bullet holes through the window.
Police spent hours interviewing parking attendants and all of her co-workers, who say they don't believe there is anything random about this.
"She was afraid for her safety and she had been for a long time when it came to this individual," said Raye.
That individual an ex with whom Scavone had a custody battle over their child for the past ten years. Records show they had just been in court. We're told Scavone was seeking to suspend his parenting time after a recent incident. Police will not elaborate on the allegations against the ex, who lives in Roseville. Someone was home, but no one answered the door when we stopped by.
As for Scavone, her co-workers are still in shock that this mother of two soon to be married is gone.
"She was an awesome mom," Raye said. "She loved her children. She was engaged. She loved her finance. She was extremely happy that her life was in a really good place."
Now that life has been cut short at the young age of 32. Her killer has not yet been caught, but state police say they are making progress in their investigation.
