ATLANTIC COUNTY, N.J. -
New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa called the suspect in a double murder investigation in Atlantic County "ruthless" and "calculating."
A Jersey City man was taken into custody Sunday in connection with the double murder investigation, state police announced Monday.
According to state police, 28-year-old Yusuf Ibrahim was taken into custody after the discovery of human remains found on private property last week in Buena Vista Township.
Police say they obtained a search warrant and searched a wooded area where cadaver dogs located disturbed dirt approximately 20 yards into the woods.
After an excavation, police say two male bodies were discovered without their heads or hands attached. Both victims, according to investigators, appeared to have suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.
A short time later, a state police canine located another burial site, where investigators say they uncovered two human heads and four human hands.
State police say the two victims were later identified by the Atlantic County Medical Examiner's Office as a 25-year-old and a 27-year-old, both from Jersey City.
Police say they later learned their suspect was driving a white Mercedes Benz that belonged to one of the victims.
Following more leads, police say they learned the Mercedes that Ibrahim was alleged to have been driving was located by the Philadelphia police on the 4100 block of Penns Grove Street. It had been abandoned and set on fire one day before the bodies were discovered in Atlantic County.
Police say they searched for Ibrahim over the course of the weekend before locating him Sunday at home in Bayonne, N.J.
"These were grisly murders in which the defendant allegedly shot both victims in the chest at close range," Chiesa said in a statement. "We allege that the defendant was ruthless and calculating in the manner in which he carried out the killings and attempted to prevent identification of the victims by cutting off their heads and hands before burying their bodies."
Ibrahim now faces charges of desecrating human remains and murder, police said.
