There has been a string of armed robberies in College Park, Maryland over the past two weeks. One was on the campus of the University of Maryland. Three others took place just off the campus.
The most recent incident happened off campus at 11:20 Friday night.
According to Prince George's County Police, three people were walking on Lakeland Road (just east of Rhode Island Avenue), when they crossed paths with two men. The two men came back behind the trio, and each pulled out a handgun. The two assailants robbed personal items from two of the three victims.
Police describe the robbers as: "two black males, one wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and brandishing a silver handgun." The other man wore a green coat. He brandished a brown handgun.
Police say the suspects fled on foot, heading east-bound on Lakeland, running toward the train tracks. County and campus police flooded into the area, but were unable to find the two suspects.
On Thursday night, a female victim was robbed on campus. It happened in parking lot KK (which is behind the Chemical/Nuclear Engineering Building). Police say a man wearing baggy jeans, a dark hooded sweatshirt and some kind of face covering pulled out a handgun and took cash, gift cards and other personal property from the woman before fleeing down Paint Branch Drive. Again, because a gun was involved, both county and campus police searched the area (including with a K9 unit), but the suspect got away.
Campus police are currently reviewing the video gathered by nearby security cameras, but have not released pictures to the media. The victim could not identify the race of the assailant in the parking lot robbery because of his face covering.
Another armed robbery happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning along Paint Branch Parkway, just off campus. Police say a female student, walking from the Metro stop toward Rt. 1, was accosted by a masked gunman who demanded (and got) money from the victim. The suspect was last seen walking toward the Metro.
Because the assailant was wearing both a mask and gloves, the victim could not identify the race of the gunman. She told police he was wearing all black clothing and red shoes.
There was an off-campus robbery attempt on Sunday, January 27th. Around 1:00 in the afternoon, a University of Maryland student was accosted in a common area inside the huge Varsity apartment complex on Rt. 1 by a man displaying (what appeared to be) a fake handgun. Police say the assailant was trying to get the student's computer. The student fought back, and another person came in and intervened, forcing the assailant to flee.
County Police subsequently arrested 21-year-old Demonte Antonio Spearman, of College Park, who police say has confessed to the crime.
The other three cases remain open, according to University of Maryland Police.
