Trial Begins For Gangster Accused Of Killing Deputy

Posted: Updated:

Los Angeles -- The prosecutor says the two victims were in "the wrong place at the wrong time."

That statement was made today at the opening of the trial of Jose Renteria, an "Avenue's Gangster" linked to two murders, including the execution of an LA County Sheriff's deputy.

Prosecutor John Collelo opened his case saying, "at its core it's about gangs, guns, and gang violence."

He talked about "hunting down" rivals -- and one who mistakenly turned out to be a sheriff's deputy.

Renteria is facing 1st degree murder charges in connection with the deputy's killing, and attempted murder for the shooting of a rival gang member.

If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

By all accounts, Ramon and Janet Barreto are an odd couple, both physically and mentally. The physical part only matters here because we are talking about a couple on the run, fugitives and you need to know what they look like to be on the lookout for them.
