Flip Those Flapjacks! It's National Pancake Day

Los Angeles, CA -

Just for the record there is something very special about flipping pancakes with Miss America! Oh, call it one of the perks of the job. Sure, I spent most of my morning talking about the Irvine Police investigation into a weekend double murder, but now it was time to talk about something lighter. How to make the perfect pancake with an American beauty queen.

Mallory Hagan hasn't had a day off since become the 92nd Miss America just a few weeks ago. And, she's loving it. She told me before we went on the air to talk about IHOP's National Pancake Day events that she had dreamed of being Miss America from the time she was a little girl. On TV she was great! So much personality and fun. But, that was also the case before and after our 10am live shot! Especially, just after I threw it back to Tony and Araksya in the studio!

I asked Mallory if she'd make a few more pancakes so we'd have some video for later in the day. She pushed the plunger on the belshaw gun. That's the device that dispenses batter onto the griddle. One push gets you a perfect silver dollar sized buttermilk pancake. Then it's time to flip 'em. Oops ... not so good. "Fail!" she says as one falls apart. Oops "fail again." Heck, who am I to criticize. I burn toast and overcook boiled water.

Last year, with the help of the Miss America Pageant, IHOP raised 3 million dollars for Children's Miracle Network hospitals by giving away small stacks of pancakes for donations. 4 million pancakes! That's a lot of batter! This year they hope to beat that. The pancakes will be available at all of IHOP's 1500 locations nationwide till 10pm tonight.

It was nice to meet Miss America. She's a nice lady! And, it was a nice light story. That's the thing about my job. I don't always know what I'm doing or who I'm talking with from one show to the next. Lots of variety. I didn't wake up this morning thinking "today I think I'll make pancakes with Miss America!" Pass the syrup!

(FOX) Today is National Pancake Day at IHOP. The restaurant is aiming to raise $3 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in celebration of the organization's 30th anniversary.

Millions of free pancakes served on National Pancake Day mean millions of miracles for those in need," said Julia Stewart, Interim President, IHOP and CEO of the parent company, DineEquity, Inc. "The concept is simple, but our mission is ambitious; to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible through Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Guests who visit the restaurant can purchase "Miracle Balloons" for $1 and $5 each.

Last year IHOP raised more than $3 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and other charities.
