Is social media making people less social?

Posted: Updated:

Do you have trouble getting your teen to talk to you? Maybe they text you instead of having a face to face conversation.

If that's true for you, you're not alone. It seems social media is actually making us less social.

Twitter and Facebook make it easy to talk to people, but sometimes the most social person online has trouble communicating to people in person.

Imagine you're at nice restaurant on a date or with a group of friends, you'd never pull out a magazine at the table and start reading it.

That's exactly what we're doing with our phones.

We feel like we've never been more social because we're so connected virtually. But, is technology making us less social?

When you look around, you see people communicating, not with other people, but with their electronic device.

Pew Research Center did a study asking, "Does social media cause social isolation?"

The results showed social media users do not have more or fewer friends.

In fact, Facebook users had more close friends.

If you feel like your kids have lost the art of communicating, what's the solution?

you can start with phone free time at dinner time to teach kids how to look each other in the eye and communicate with words.
