Generator use by mayor, chief after Sandy probed

Posted: Updated:

NORTH HALEDON, N.J. (AP) - A borough in Passaic County has begun a formal inquiry into the personal use of borough generators following Superstorm Sandy by both the mayor and the police chief of North Haledon.

An investigative committee of the Borough Council took testimony Monday night behind closed doors from Mayor Randy George. The Record newspaper says George refused to comment afterward.

George and Police chief Robert Bracco have both acknowledged publicly using borough equipment - the mayor at his ice cream parlor and the chief at his home in Wayne. Both said they changed their minds and returned the equipment the next day.

The council is seeking to determine if any borough ordinances were violated. The date for the next hearing was not immediately set.

The committee probe is independent of a criminal investigation also under way.
