State law says public schools must begin after Labor Day in Minnesota, but many districts are seeking waivers for earlier starts -- including in Edina, where parents gave the school board an earful over the move.
On Monday night, parents packed the school board meeting to sound off against the proposal, but to no avail. The board voted unanimously to adopt a new school calendar that will kick off the 2014 school year on Aug. 25 instead of on Labor Day as in years past.
One parent collected nearly 400 signatures on a petition against the plan. Another critic suggested that the board members should spend six hours inside a classroom without an air conditioner in the late August heat before making their decision.
