Daredevil Wallenda ready for outrageous stunt in Sarasota

Posted: Updated:

It's a 'go' for Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk across U.S. 41 in Sarasota. He'll make the walk on a wire 200 feet above the roadway without a safety harness.

The Sarasota City Commission gave him special permission to do the stunt. Wallenda was forced to wear a tether last summer during his famed walk across Niagara Falls -- but not this time.

Wallenda says he's ready.

"There's always concerns, there's always stress that goes into what I do. The truth is, there is risk in what I'm doing. Of course there's always worrying. I always say that fear is a choice; danger is real. And that's something I have to deal with on a daily basis."

Wallenda is scheduled to start his walk at Sarasota's Bayfront Park next to U.S. 41 just after 10:30 Tuesday morning. It's free to watch.

Part of the highway will be shut down during the walk.

As of Tuesday morning, the weather looked fine, though there was a bit of wind. Jennifer Mitchell of Circus Sarasota said Wallenda was preparing for the stunt through the night, and now it's just down to execution.

"This morning he's relaxing, praying and spending time with his family," she said.
