WASHINGTON -

Freezing rain and sleet is causing delays for schools and workers across the Washington and Baltimore regions.

The federal government is opening late Monday due to the winter weather. The government will open to workers at 10 a.m. and will open to the public at noon.

In Maryland, highway officials say drivers should use caution during the Monday morning commute. The State Highway Administration says crews will be out before commuters hit the roads, but icy conditions are possible.

The National Weather Service says central and western Maryland are under a winter weather advisory from 5 a.m. to noon Monday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the District of Columbia and surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia until 10 a.m.
