NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An out-of-service train of the Long Island Rail Road collided with a car near the Brentwood station Tuesday morning setting the vehicle on fire and killing two people, authorities said.

The two people killed were in the car.

An engineer and two crew members were on the train, which was not carrying any passengers. The crew was not hurt, officials said.

The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. at the train crossing.

MTA Police said the train engineer and an independent witness both said that the gate at a road crossing was down when the car went around and drove onto the tracks.

The driver was talking on a mobile phone and may have been looking the other way from where the train was coming.

The engineer pulled the brake, but the trai, which was going 80mph, slammed into the car and pushed the flaming wreckage more than a mile into the station, officials said.

The bodies in the car were burned beyond recognition, authorities said.

LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch service is restored in both directions between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma. Service had been temporarily suspended east of Farmingdale because of the incident.

Some evening trains are delayed and others are canceled, the MTA said.

On Sunday, an LIRR train struck and killed a person on the tracks east of Mineola.
