Designs unveiled for 325-square-foot apartments

Posted: Updated:

New York has legions of residents living in tiny apartments. Now the city is about to see just how small they're willing to go.

Expectations that population and rents will keep climbing are challenging architects to design dwellings no larger than a one-car garage.

New Yorkers can get a feel for one at an exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Opening Wednesday, it features a furnished 325-square-foot studio. It incorporates the latest space-saving designs, including a TV that slides away to reveal a bar.

Visitors to the exhibition will see models and drawings of housing designs by architectural teams commissioned in 2011 by Citizens Housing & Planning Council, in partnership with the Architectural League of New York. The exhibition also presents winning designs from the Bloomberg administration's recently launched pilot competition to test new housing models, as well as examples set by other cities in the United States and around the world, including Seattle, Providence, Montreal, San Diego, and Tokyo

The city plans to construct an apartment building of so-called micro-units in Manhattan next year, offering affordable options for singles and empty nesters.

If successful, it could ultimately overturn a requirement that new apartments be at least 400 square feet.
