Vets save pit bull that had ear ripped off

PHOENIX -

It's a brutal case of animal abuse. Two pit bulls, believed to have been used in dog fights, have been turned over to a valley vet. One of the dogs was so badly injured her ear was ripped off her head.

Someone brought one of the dogs to the clinic to get help, claiming she had been hit by a car. The dog, a female given the name Lovebug, was missing an ear.

But Dr. Enrique Cruz knows better.

"It wasn't a clean cut, it was clear bite wounds, and not only the ear, also the neck, the left arm, the shoulders."

Lovebug was surrendered to the hospital, and a second dog, Bear, was seized.

Dr. Cruz does not see a lot of dog fighting victims at Camelback Animal Clinic, but when it came to Lovebug, he knew she was probably used a bait dog to train other pit bulls to attack.

"They're not aggressive towards each other, or even towards the other dogs," says Dr. Cruz. "Pit bulls are not mean or extremely aggressive dogs by nature. The dogs are sweet, even the male, the one that looks more pit bull, is a sweet dog."

Lovebug and Bear are up for adoption to someone with the patience to nurse them back to health.

It's not known if anyone has been arrested in connection with this case. It's a felony to participate in dog fighting in Arizona.

FOX 10's Dan Spindle reports.
