My story on what catfishing is with a look at the MTV show aired in the 8:00am show today, following Bobby D's story on the main part of the story: The bizarre case surround Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o has put the focus on the practice of catfishing.
The Urban Dictionary defines catfishing as: Someone who pretends to be someone they are not online to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.
Back in 2010 there was a documentary called "catfish" it centered on one of the filmmakers Nev Schulman who had been a victim himself.
It spawned an MTV show called "Catfish: The TV Show" that debuted last November...here's a quick look at one woman's case. In the show they reveal the "catfish" had been doing this for four years with multiple people. When asked why, she blamed being bullied by others for creating this fictitious online person.
And now there is a connection between the MTV show and the Manti case.
The host, Nev Schulman who you just saw says a woman contacted him for help because her photo was being used in the fake profile, it first happened via a since deleted tweet.
The host of the MTV show says he's working on investigating the case.
